Rüdiger Schestag
Schestag has an extraordinary idea: He wants to create a 5 x 8 metre picture in the style of a Renaissance painting consisting of 100 single portraits. VIEWspotlight interviewed the photographer about the background story behind the idea and presents first photographs. We are very much looking forward to the results!
“The idea was born out of the desire to make use of the means of photo editing in order to progress into the style worlds of painting without neglecting the immediacy of the classical portrait through EIP. To the calm of the portrait subjects in painting (especially in the Renaissance) inspires me to set the velocity of photography in contrast the calm of painting. In painting, the models often had to sit motionless for days. Strength as the result in painting is what I want to achieve as well.
The varnish cracks are photographed surfaces of old paintings, where only the structure of the cracks is being released. Moreover, the contrast and perhaps the colour are being adjusted. With male models the weapons and the jewellery are partly inserted by montage, in few cases also the background.
The photographs are being taken with a Hasselbad with PhaseONE back part, some photos with a Canon EOS 5D.
Each portrait requires about three hours time including styling and make-up. The subsequent editing takes up to two days. For the whole project I calculate about one year, since realistically you only pull off one to two shoots a week.”
